Web Hosting Review: Justhost.com Part 1

As promised, I will publish my first short Web Hosting review. I’m not going to review the control panel, I will focus on basic system information and daily use aspects.

I have more than a few sites with just host, they are all in one account and on the same fast server. A simple search will ell you almost all web hosts are offering unlimited almost everything on their website, on the home page and anywhere they can put an banner or ad. And yes, I signed up with just host because at the time they offered unlimited plan, unlimited disk space, bandwidth, database, add-on domains, it was all good for something less than $4 a month, best of all, the hosting platform is Linux, and they offer SSH access, though you will have to pay for it, something like $18/yr, but it’s really handy when you need some quick fix, I can access my account on the command line using my T-Mobile G2, I love SSH access even I have to pay for it. By the way, as I mentioned above, my sites are on a fast server, I have to pay for that privilege too.

To their credit, that fast machine is a total 16 cores Intel Xeon E5520 2.27GHz,  12GB RAM, around 900GB hard drive space, not too bad a machine. I don’t know what the slow machine looks like, probably I can find it out late. If there are not too many sites on the same server I think I will be in heaven but obviously this not the case. By my humble estimation, they probably put more than a few hundreds active sites on the same machine, probably more, so the fast machine essential becomes a “slow” machine. The access speed is at at slow side, and web response is not that great, maybe I should say OK but it’s quite slow from time to time. Now you know what kind of hardware environment I have, this is important because what happened late was interesting.

Last Saturday morning, when I was doing routine check of my sites, I found all my sites on just host were totally down with the information “This account has been suspended”, I was shocked, “what heck?”, then I found an email received at 3:12AM stating that my account was using too much system resources, you guessed it, CPU time! There were a few processes used more than 8% CPU time,  namely wp-cron.php, and index.php, wp-cron.php is routinely called by wp installation itself, and index.php burst must have something to do with increasing visits. I contacted their support, first by calling their tier 1 support and I was instructed to contact technical support by email, I did and I got response pretty fast, they explained what happened in the email and offered me options, such as upgrade to a dedicated server which would cost me $149 a month, while I paid something around $200 for 3 years shared hosting, I was not ready to upgrade.

After a few emails my account was opened for my IP only, I took their advice and went ahead enabled database cache and page cache on all my sites, then they opened my sites to the public, so far my resource usage is under control, but I am keeping an close eye on the performance of my sites, and just host support is quite helpful in the process.

On a 1 to 10 scale, 10 being the best, I will give a 7 to just host server performance, 9 for their technical support, SSH is a plus(but you have to pay for it, others like greengeeks will offer SSH for free, but some hosts don’t offer SSH at all), 7 for price.

Web Hosting Hall of Fame Score: 7.9/10 (performance, support, price and extras)

Linux Web Hosting Or Windows Web Hosting?

The question about which hosting platform is better, Linux or Windows, seems pretty straight at first glance for anyone, people who familiar with Windows while not knowing too much about GNU/Linux or only knows Windows will definitely tell you: Windows is the first and foremost choice, these people will demand Windows hosts even they don’t know anything about hosting. And people with clue will know there are no comparison between these two hosting platforms, from system efficiency, cost effective, reliability and security point of view, it seems that Windows hosting is only for specialized hosting needs, if you need some Windows only applications to run on the host, otherwise there is no reason to choose Windows hosts.

I haven’t been doing hosting thingy for too long, maybe only a little less than one year, I used to run all my blogs and server side stuff on my own servers, we have dedicated servers and in house servers are all running Linux, mostly CentOS, so you may say that I have a bias against Windows, and it’s true, in our office we run everything on Linux, but it doesn’t mean I don’t know Windows, I’ve been running Win XP in virtual machine for maybe 5 years, for testing purpose, the reason I don’t want to touch Windows on physical hardware is that it’s too fragile and weak, I just can’t put it to serious use without banging my head against the wall at least 10,000 times. Now I revealed my background, let’s get back to the topic. Why I or you should choose Linux Hosting? Aside from reasons mentioned in the first paragraph, what else make the Linux hosting better than other hosts? I don’t have too much experience with Windows hosts so I will tell my web hosting story.

About 11 month ago, I needed to create a lot different websites, and I didn’t want to put all those websites on our own servers, so I looked around for cheap and reliable hosting, almost every Web Hosting site has Linux hosts and Windows hosts available, though two options had different prices, for me it was Linux all the way, in order to diversify hosting sites, I signed up with at least 8 different web hosting companies, and I always choose the cheapest option, which usually ran $3-$4 a month, and all hosts were running Linux. Some of the hosts were faster than others, some of them offered SSH, some offered SSH but would ask for picture ID, some simply had no such option available, and they almost all were using cpanel. Up until now, my experiences with all these hosts are most pleasant, some of them had outage, server misconfiguration, but all problems were dealt with quickly and painless. The available options and functionality are more than enough for my needs(I build ecommerce sites and forums), and the up time and speed are mostly good, especially there are two of them offer unmatched speed, that’s amazing considering I only pay around $4 a month. Last but not least, all hosts except one  offer everything unlimited, unlimited addon domains, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited database, unlimited disk space, I feel it’s good to go with hosting now(I used to despise the idea to host your sites on someone else’s server.)!

So far my hosting experience are pretty positive, and I believe this won’t change in the near future, so I fully endorse Linux hosting, while I have no idea about Windows hosting, just reasonable guess, first you pay more when you choose Windows hosting, second I guess you need Windows desktop to properly manage your hosts, it’s a big risk if you ask me. So for me it’s Linux hosting any day.

I probably will do a full review about 8 hosts I am using right now, including management(no big difference, all cpanel based except one), accessibility, speed, reliability, adaptability, flexibility, long term usability(I will keep using them for at least another 2-3 years), customer service, technical support, etc., Stay tuned!

How to enable Remote Mysql connection when host is blocking it?

I just buy a shared linux host, with mysql database, but my host said i can not connect remotely for security reasons, and that i should upgrade to VPS server to have remove MYSQL.

How can i access my database to insert/remove/edit records?

My host is Cinfu, and i connect from home.

You can’t. They block the ports, and the mysql config prevents remote connections. You don’t have access to the configs that let you change this. And if you try, they will detect that attempt and will cancel your account, rightfully so.

If you want to update the database on your host, all you have to do is write a couple of simple PHP scripts that let you do this. If you don’t know how to do this, then fork out the bucks for the higher level of service that lets you connect to the database. This, btw, is a bad idea, there is a very good reason they don’t allow this.

What is the best web hosting company to build an ecommerce site?

I’m looking for a web hosting plan that is cheap, offers unlimited space, helps me design my store and add video or flash if I want to, comes with a shopping cart preferably with Paypal. What do you suggest?

Good day Alex,

when considering Web Hosting you will want to focus on a service that besides meeting all your individual needs, also takes into consideration the security of your data and offers a reliable connection. In thirteen years working as a developer I had to learn this in a much painful way.

The current market for shared hosting is rather misleading and the cause of this is that the majority of web hosting companies offer incredibly appealing and appetizing affiliate commissions paying off huge amounts of cash for any enrolment. Consequently, quite a few folks, definitely mispresent the characteristics and functionality of a web host sometimes even making claims that an $5 web host can easily match a $200 dedicated server with regard to speed, storage space and bandwidth. The hard truth is, you get what you pay for. No ifs or buts.

To make myself clear, I personally sell website hosting plans on my own website. There is nothing wrong with that and in absolutely no way the remarks made above are meant to imply anything about the folks here on Yahoo! Answers who 99.9% of the time are usually authentic and valuable people who truly want to help other people. However, you need to learn to check out things for yourself. Different people have different needs and even if a host works for you today, it doesn’t mean that it will be good for you next year too. Some hosts that were delivering an excellent service until a couple of years ago, have recently become complete and utter crap. A free tool you can use to check the reliability, speed and uptime of a host is this: http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/ Just do a Google search for "this site is hosted by [your host of choice]" and pick a few sites to test out. This way you will get an idea of the host without the need to buy anything.

If you’re looking for a decent cheap webhost the one I recommend to all my clients and I use for my smaller sites is http://bh.webhostingwiki.biz It costs $5-$7 depending on the plan you choose. Of course, do not believe the "unlimited everything" they advertise. It’s just made up hype that all of the shared hosts seem to love. All hosts that offer unlimited bandwidth will limit your CPU usage or the number of files you can host with them.

Also, don’t expect the speed of a dedicated server from any cheap web hosting. If that’s what you’re looking for, you’re wasting your time. If a shared host offers great speed and unlimited bandwidth, then you can bet CPU usage will be extremely limited meaning you can’t use any plugins and have to limit your traffic. Conversely if the CPU usage isn’t restricted then the service runs as slow as it could be. The secret is to look for a service that’s a compromise between these two extremes: decent speed and decent usability. My advice is to start with the service which I suggested that should provide adequate speed, protection and reliability for a small business. It also has "one click scripts" to install all of the features you are after with the click of a button. But it’s really not rocket science to get the software and install it yourself on any host you want. Then when you start growing, in a year or two, move to semi-dedicated or even dedicated hosting.

Good Luck!

How do you find the hosting server of a website if you have the Registrar name?

I didn’t set this website up, and at the same time, my client cant seem to remember the hosting server he used. I was able to find the registrar in which the domain name was registered, but no information about where the website is being accessed from. Sure I could rout the DNS to the new hosting company, but then he’d be paying hosting across two servers! How do I find the hosting company of this domain name?

Who Is Hosting This:
